The active ingredients in most of these products include benzoyl peroxide, salycic acid and retinoids. Most of these products work to reduce visibility and also the size of the scar. The creams and lotions should be applied directly on the affected region.

There are a number of creams that are used to heal scars for example

Mederma – This cream contains SPF10 as the active helps to reduce the appearance and also to soften the scar.

Hydroquinone – This cream works by lightening the scars making them less visible,

Silicon Gel – This products helps to lighten the scars and also to prevent the itching that come with scars.

Other methods used to heal scars

During dermabrasion, the dermatologist will use a rotary device that helps to remove the outer layer of the skin. The rotary tool has a head with diamond beads embedded such that when the head rotates, the beads will eat away the scar tissues. It is important that the process is conducted by a skilled professional because the patient can easily be harmed if the device is not used properly.

Laser resurfacing

This is a method whereby a beam of light is used to heat the affected region. The heat produced helps to remove the upper and middle layers of the skin where the scars cells are located. There are different types of lasers that can be used to resurface the skin for example YAG (garnet), carbon dioxide (CO2), Aluminum and yttrium lasers. YAG laser is the latest and most effective of the stated lasers.

Chemical peeling

This method of scar removal involves the use of a chemical product to peel the scar away. A chemical solution is applied on the scars and then left for some time to dry. After it has completely dried off, it is peeled to remove the top layer of the skin that has the scars. Most of the chemical peels used contain dilute glycolic acid which helps to break down the upper layer of the skin. It is important to note that this method will be very effective only on small and light scars.

Silicon sheets

Silicon sheets employ the same principle as chemical peels. Silicon sheets will be attached on the scars and then removed. They help to remove the top layers of the skin. They are also not effective on big and hardened scars.

Skin conditioners

Scars that have recently formed and those that are soft, light and small can heal simply by regular use of a skin conditioner. Skin conditioners with ingredients such as cocoa butter and vitamin E will be most effective. Skin conditioners allow the skin to remain moist all the time and therefore will prevent the scars from hardening. If the scars can remain soft just like the other skin parts, the outer layer will be shed as normal skin shed and with time, the scar will have disappeared.

Healing from the scar

During the period when you will be recovering from the scar, it is important to provide suitable conditions that promote fast healing process. For example you should eat foods that are rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. Also wear a sunscreen every time you are going outdoors.
