reducing scarsScarring of the skin is a problem that many people need the solution for. For scars that are in an area where they are very visible, like the facial area, finding a solution becomes even more important. Having a scar can make a person feel self-conscious about it. Medical advancements have made it possible for many different types of scar removal treatments to be discovered. There are scar creams that you can purchase on the market without a prescription.

There are various formulations of scar creams that you can try. One popular type uses silicone in its formulation. Basically, when the silicone scar cream is applied to the skin, it forms a protective shield over the scar, much like a bandage. The shield locks in moisture and keeps the scar hydrated. The scar softens and flattens.

Skin cells are made mostly of water. When new cells regenerate, they need water to thrive. So, the premise behind using a silicone scar cream is that the extra moisture provide to the scarred area will promote the regeneration of new skin cells more efficiently. As the old scar is shed along with the dead skin, the new skin cells emerge without the scar.

Silicone scar creams are used and recommended by many surgeons. Many of them recommend application of such a cream after the surgical site has healed and the sutures are removed.

The use of a silicone scar cream must be routine and regular. Most products ask that you apply it once in the morning and once at night. Follow the directions diligently. Patience is needed to see positive results because it can take anywhere from two to four months to see fading of the scar.

Some silicone based scar creams contain extra skin healing ingredients that help nourish the skin. Different people will get different results with these products. So, the best thing to do is to read reviews and evaluate the list of ingredients in the cream. Make sure that the product does not contain any ingredients that may irritate your skin.

Besides using a silicone based scar cream to help your scar heal, there are other things that you should do to help in the process. If your scar is on an area of your skin that is exposed, you must protect that with a sunscreen before you go outside. The UV rays from the sun will stimulate the production of melanocytes in the scarred area and can darken the scarred area even more.

So, you will need to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30 or higher. Your sunscreen should contain one or more of these active ingredients, avobenzone, mexoryl, zinc, or titanium oxide. These ingredients provide full spectrum protection from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. If your scar is on your facial area, you should also consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection. Stay out of the sun between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm when the sun’s rays are at its strongest.

Make sure that you keep your body fully hydrated at all times. Remember, moisture is a friend to scar healing. Skin cells need water to stay healthy. Dehydrated skin will not heal. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Also, eat lots of fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. These will protect your skins against free radical damage and will give your skin a healthier look overall.

As your scar is healing, be sure not to pick on it. Scabs may form and skin may start to peel off, but let that fall away naturally. If you pick on a scar, you may create a new skin wound and a new scar, which will defeat the purpose of your efforts.

If the scar site becomes itchy, do not scratch it. If your scar is on an area of your skin where your clothing is irritating it, put a bandage over it as a guard against the irritation. You want to leave your scar along as much as possible. The only time when you should be handling it is when you are applying the scar cream to it.

The healing time will differ depending on the type and the size of the scar that you have. Obviously, the bigger the scar, the longer it will take to heal. If home care methods are not producing the results that you need in a reasonable amount of time, you may want to consider professional treatment at the dermatologist’s office. There are more advanced techniques that involve lasers in removing scars.

Again, the type of laser used and how long it will take will depend on the type and size of your scar. The dermatologist can give you an idea of a treatment plan and a cost estimate after he has examined your skin condition. The cost will depend on how many treatment sessions you will need to attend. He may recommend a combination of methods.

With that said, silicone scar creams still have a good track record in providing an effective solution to scar healing. The important thing to remember is that you must give it time to work on your skin. It can take weeks before results can be seen. In the meantime, follow healthy living habits to build up your body’s immune system. A healthy body will heal a lot more quickly.
