Tips on Keloid Removal

PLEASE SHARE:

Keloids are those annoying scars that usually occur on the skin due to an injury, an acne or even a surgery. Keloids can cause you a lot of discomfort, decreasing your self-esteem and taking away your peace of mind. This is the main reason almost everyone who deals with this condition wants to get rid of the scars. Keloids tend to enlarge progressively and are considered more dangerous than regular scars from acne or other similar skin condition.

Causes of Keloids

Doctors have not yet reach an agreement regarding the causes of keloids. One thing is certain- keloids are the direct results of an inadequate healing process of the wound. Normally, there should be a balance between the breakdown and the production of collagen. However, when this condition triggers, the cells in the skin produce twice as much collagen as before, which consequently leads to the thick appearance characteristic to keloid scars. Possible causes that trigger this unusual healing process might involve skin tension, genetic factors, skin color and a large number of fibroblasts present in the skin.

Treatments for Keloid Removal

There are various treatments and methods you can use to get rid of keloids. Some of the most common are:

– Surgery. This treatment is somewhat risky, because when you cut off a keloid, it will trigger the formation of another one. However, some surgeons with a few years of experience managed to cure this condition by injecting steroids after removing the keloid.

– Silicone sheets. This treatment is pretty simple. All you need to do is to place a sheet of silicone gel on all the affected areas on your body for a few hours each day. However, the bad news is that the results of using this method are somehow variable. Moreover, the silicone sheets have to be worn for at least a couple of months, which is not too comfortable.

– Laser. This is the most modern technology of keloid removal. A pulsed-dye laser is extremely effective at flattening those keloids on your skin and making them look better. This treatment is safe, and in the same time not too painful. However, if you want to use this method of keloid removal, you will have to break your budget, because the treatment sessions are not covered by insurance plans. You will need to have several treatment sessions that will extend over a period of at least a couple of months.

– Interferon. Recent studies proved that interferons can fight off bacteria and viruses with ease. But what are these interferons? Well, they are some kinds of proteins produced by our body’s immune system. According to the scientists, injections of interferon have been found to reduce the overall size of keloids. Another research is underway in this field. Specialists from several countries are working together to find a way to stimulate the body to produce more interferons.

– Radiation. Even if this method is considered extremely dangerous by most of the doctors today, some of them had the courage to try it on willing patients. Their reports record a safe and effective use of this method, outlining that the patients haven’t experienced any side effects afterwards.
